Hamish Canham (1962-2003) was a Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist at the Tavistock Clinic, and was Joint Organizing Tutor for the clinical training in child psychotherapy. He was Joint Editor of the Journal of Child Psychotherapy. He also taught in Bologna, Italy on the Tavistock model child psychotherapy training there. Judith Edwards is a consultant child and adolescent psychotherapist working at the Tavistock Clinic, where she teaches on several courses and is Course Tutor for the MA in Psychoanalytic Studies.

Margot Waddell is a psychoanalyst and a consultant child psychotherapist in the Adolescent Department of the Tavistock Clinic. She took a PhD in English Literature at Cambridge and has explored literary perspectives in relation to clinical theory and practice in many publications over the years. A new edition of her most recent book, Inside Lives: Psychoanalysis and the Growth of the Personality, was brought out by Karnac in 2002. Only slowly does she allow herself to recognize the truth of things—the blanks and confusions of her mother’s mind, standing also, perhaps, for those blanks and confusions which are bound to attend on the inevitable generational difference between one age and another. She struggles to regain or recover some vestige of her own thoughts. We are involved in a painful process of mourning and working through, during which the external figure can eventually be let go and installed, instead, as an internal presence.
