Although one of its founders, Spurzheim, had crossed the Channel in 1 8 1 4 to lecture to the benighted Britons, the London Phrenological Society was not established until 1 824; it had taken a decade to catch on. Like the ancient humoral system, phrenology was an attempt to relate body - or in this case, brain - to mind.
